A Feminist Analysis of Othello  Ã‚   In William Shakespeare’s tragic play Othello there are numerous instances of obvious sexism aimed at the three women in the drama -- Desdemona, Emilia and Bianca – and aimed at womankind generally. Heilman discusses a scene which occurs late in the play and which is sexist: When Othello summons Desdemona and dismisses Emilia, â€Å"Leave procreants alone . . .; / Cough or cry hem if anybody come. / Your mystery, your mystery! . . .† (IV.2.28-30), he not only dismisses Emilia, accuses Desdemona of infidelity, and betrays his own insane bitterness, but he converts the marriage into a brothel arrangement in which all three are involved, and by so doing establishes imaginative lines of connection with the role of Bianca and particularly with the Iago philosophy of sexual conduct. (331) In the opening scene, while Iago is expressing his hatred for the general Othello for his having chosen Michael Cassio for the lieutenancy, he contrives a plan to partially avenge himself (â€Å"I follow him to serve my turn upon him†), with Roderigo’s assistance, by alerting Desdemona’s father, Brabantio, to the fact of his daughter’s elopement with Othello: â€Å"Call up her father, / Rouse him: make after him, poison his delight [. . .].† Implied in this move is the fact of a father’s assumed control over the daughter’s choice of a marriage partner. Beyonce started out in a vocalist pop group called Destiny's Child. It was a group formed in 1990. The original members were Beyonce Knowles and LaTavia Roberson. They were just nine years old when the two met at an audition and became friends. Beyonce's father Matthew Knowles, set about developing an act based on the girls' singing and rapping under the name GirlTyme. Kelly Rowland joined the group on 1992 then LeToya Lucket joined in 1993. They spent the next couple of years working their way up to the Houston Club scene. They eventually performed opening acts for famous R&B artists like SWV, Dru Hill, and Immature. Later, in 1997 Destiny's Child was offered a recording contract by Columbia Records. After the fifth Grammy nomination at the 2001 award show LeToya and LaTavia left the group because of management struggles. However, shortly afterwards, Michelle Williams joined the group and they took two awards at the Grammy's as the Best R&B Sing and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. After all this success, the three talented performers decided to try their hands at solo careers before investing their time in another Destiny's Child album. Beyonce, who was the lead singer of the group, captured the spotlight with her sex appeal and strong vocals. In fact, before her first album was organized, she had a hit in 2003 with Jay-Z called â€Å"Bonnie and Clyde,† and was in a movie with Mike Myers in Austin Powers in Goldmember. This shows that she is able to make her own decisions. She was already getting famous for acting as well as singling on her own. Beyonce spend most of her time on her career instead of fooling around. She really wanted to accomplish her goal of being a famous singer, and she did. I am privileged. Blessed. My life is cushioned with a comfortable home, family vacations in tropical countries, and numerous extracurricular activities. But growing up, I never valued the possessions and experiences that I was blessed with. I took them for granted and assumed that I would always have everything. My attitude was indifferent; I thought, â€Å"I’ll always be living a nice life.† However, a single tragedy that I witnessed revealed to me that I might not always be living a nice life: in fact, I might not always be living. In my sophomore year of high school, my fellow student, â€Å"Joseph,† died literally at my feet. It was a crisp October morning, and I was walking to school through the crisp autumn air. Bikers whizzed by me in the lane next to the sidewalk, each one hurrying to arrive at school on time. As I nodded softly to the music pulsing through my headphones, a large garbage truck slowly crawled by, towing some sort of trailer. Other drivers were pulling to the sides of the road and jumping out of their cars, sprinting towards the bloody and motionless boy. As I reached the scene, I felt my stomach churn. Joseph lay in the gutter, inches from my black laced sneakers. I crumpled to the ground. The aftermath of the accident passed in a blur of ambulance sirens, sobbing parents, and a black body bag that stays burned in my mind. Finally, when Joseph’s body had been taken away, a police officer sent me on to school. However, I instead headed home, still in shock. I had seen my fellow student die. My fellow student who would have taken the SAT and applied for college and gone on to pursue a career, just as I would. Every experience that I would have was an experience that he had lost the chance to have. And he could have been me. I was only a yard away from the accident; he could have been me. I could have lost my family, my future, my life. If my fellow student could die, I could to. Following Joseph’s death, I learned to appreciate everyone I knew and everything I had. I began documenting my trips and experiences with photographs and writing. I wrote thank-you cards and little notes for my friends. I spent time with my family. I savored each meal. I put my energy into studying and doing well in school, because I had the chance to. It would be cruel of me to view life with the indifferent attitude that I once had; at least I had a life, and so I should value it. Although Joseph’s death was a heartbreaking tragedy that never should have happened, his death taught me the value of life, and for that I am grateful.
